Initial thoughts on our new ContourGPS HD video camera
My initial thoughts on the ContourGPS HD Camera.
I had very high hopes but unfortunately I have been let down like a number of other people. The ContourGPS isn't ready for prime-time. The camera's firmware is incredibly buggy. The bluetooth connectivity rarely works and even then only if you turn it off, turn it on, "forget this device," etc. Definitely don't buy it for it's bluetooth capabilities. The iPhone app needs bluetooth to work so again if you think you're going to control the settings of your ContourGPS from your iPhone or iPad you're mistaken.
Quality of the device is probably 1 star out of 5. The battery on mine was stuck in the camera. I had to use pliers to get it out. I looked on the Contour.com support forums and apparently this is a common problem. Another problem area in the "guts" is the sensitivity w/ regards to the placement of the bluetooth card. If you push it in or leave it out more than 1mm then the electrical connection between the device and the card will be broken. Yup! Just 1 millimeter. Another documented problem in their support forums. Ugh!!!
Last major problem is that the GPS won't work because it can't get a GPS lock. It can't get a GPS lock because the bluetooth won't stay connected long enough to update the satellite orbits. On their forums they suggest leaving the camera hooked to your laptop to update the GPS but that never seemed to work for me.
Also please make sure you know that you have to buy a bluetooth card separately for the ContourGPS. Their website is 100% misleading in the informational sections of their site. If you look through the support forums you will see that if you have an iPhone or iPad and want to use Contour's cool iPhone App then you will have to spend $30 on the extra card. This isn't mentioned in their products section.
At this point definitely save your money and go with a GoPro camera or a cheap flip camera of some sort. The ContourGPS should absolutely not be on the market at this time.
