Problems with rain sensor after windshield replacement

Had my winshield replaced a while back and the rain sensing wipers havent worked sin. Had the guy who replaced it (aftermarket - he didn't replace the double sided sticky tape on the sensor which was all bubbled) get a new tape kit and re-install the sensor on the winshield. Still doesn't work. I spoke to the BMW dealership who said their windshields come with the sensor installed precisely because of this. Is he giving the bull or is this true? Anybody had an aftermarket windshield installed with the rain sensing wipers and did they work afterwards?

    Thanks,
    Keith

When I had mine replaced my insurance company said ther were no aftermarket windshields available for my car (2000 540i with rain sense) so they authorized the glass company to get one directly from the local dealership.

Thanks. When I got the replacement windshield, they had two listed - with and without rain sensor. That made me think it was the air bubbles in the double sided tape that are the problem.

Maybe they installed the wrong one? Every rain sensing wiper problem I've heard of always ended up to be a problem with the windshield.

Stupid question, Do you have any DSC/ASC, brake or abs lights on? I know the module has some sort of connection with the speed sensing wipers since they don't work when you have the module out.

Yes, that's possible - they were supposed to install the "rain-sensing" windsheild, but who knows?

    Nope, no warning lights on.

I wouldn't doubt it since there is a nice difference in the price of the windshield. Take a picture of yours and Ill see if mine is any different.

Unfortunately, the car is in Pennsylvania with my daughter so no pics until she comes home. But it's the standard rain sensor setup like the last one (OEM).

If you don't mind me asking, How much did it run you to replace it? That's next on my list of repairs since its leaking every time it rains

The windshield for the rain sensor was about $250 (about $20 less for no rain sensor). The dealer wanted $1000 and Safelite wanted $400. The windshield itself is fine (no distortion or oddities) and he did a good job installing it (except for the rain sensor).

When a whindscreen is replaces the rain sensor system has to be reinitialised. Was this done?

I am not sure if it can be done without the BMW test system - but the following is the info that I can find

    Cheers
    Jim Cash
[h=3]Initialisation[/h]Due to the optical process, the rain sensor has to be adapted to the windscreen. This adaptation takes place at initialisation.
Requirement for faultless initialisation is that the windscreen glass is dry, clean and free of defects in the area of the rain sensor.
The initialisation is performed using the service function ”Initialise rain sensor” in the BMW diagnosis system. In the service function, the adaptation values in the rain sensor are deleted. This is followed by adjustment of the sensor system to the windscreen based on the following sequence:
    • Switching off the rain sensor
    • Switch off terminal 15 and terminal R
    • Switch on terminal R and terminal 15 and wait 10 seconds
In the 10 seconds waiting period, the new adaptation values are determined and stored.
Initialisation of the rain sensor is necessary:
    • After replacing the windscreen
    • Fitting a used rain-driving light sensor
Note: a used sensor must be coded beforehand!

No, no attempt was made to re-initialize the sensor. Is this something only the dealer can do?

Re-initialize?? When the local glass shop replaced my windshield they just put it in and the rain sense worked fine.
This is just a glass shop, no other tools to do any repair work.
From what I remember the only difference between the "with and without" rain sense glass is the clips that are bonded to the glass to hold the rain sense module.
    Anybody got a pic....can't believe I don't.

Maybe re-initialize only needs to be done if the module is replaced?
