My van got dented and I submitted a claim to the insurance. I got an estimate and the insurance company sent me a check. My financial situation all of a sudden went downhill very fast and I remembered that once before about 10 years ago, I was able to keep a check for damage if I chose to not get it fixed. This time, however, the insurance company put my name, my husband's name and the body shop's name on the check. I asked the body shop if they would sign the check over to me and they said no. The damage is purely cosmetic and it seems like if I want to live with a damaged car, and have the resale value go down because of it, I should be able to decide whether to fix it or keep the money. I don't want to do anything illegal, but I want to take advantage of every opportunity available to me. Any advice?
