Driver's side mirror discoloration and melting
I have a question. My driver's side mirror is for some reason becoming very discolored and the surrounding plastic appears to be melting (?).
Basically the mirror surface is turning a dull, orange/brown metallic, with the darkest color around the edges and in a circular pattern inward, with the middle of the mirror surface still somewhat normal, though still discolored.
Furthermore, the rubber/plastic that surrounds the mirror surface itself appears to be melting at the lower right corner. That's the best way I can describe it really...
Does anyone know what is causing this, how I can stop it, or how I can fix it?
It's happening on my 2001 3.0i.

Had this problem with an E36 (mirrors turned brown around edges) and had to replace the glass, which snapped in. Bav Auto wanted over $100 a side for it. Heated mirror causing the problem maybe?
It was then I decided no more BMWs. Replacement mirrors for my friend's Jetta were $35 a side.
Not just the glass the whole housing, glass, motors, heater, wiring harness, the works.
I love my BMWs, but the cost of parts is killing me.
Junk yard would be my second suggestion.

I see glass on Amazon for as little as $19.99.
Google X5 mirror glass.
It apparently snaps into place like with the E36. Not hard to fix.
