New M Roadster owner
Hi,
I just bought a 2001 M roadster. It's Imola red with 80,000 miles.
I paid 14,000,but now my mechanic says I need the following done:
1. Oil pan gasket is leaking, recommend oil service at same time $873
2. Oil pressure relief valve leaking $217
3. P/S pump and pressure line leaking, and recommend P/S flush at same time $1397
4. Transmission output shaft seal and shifter seal leaking, hardy disc cracked badly, also recommend transmission service at same time $672
5. Timing chain tensioner seal leaking $85
6. VANOS unit leaking $2761
7. Recommend brake flush
8. Recommend replacement of air filter and spark plugs $427
9. Inner tie rods have play, both sides $748
10. Recommend differential service $110
11. Front sway bar links have play $275
Do these items and prices look reasonable?
At the end of the day I'm going to be into it for about $20,000. I may have been a bit impulsive...Reply With Quote 206.174.200.62

Uh...no, he must have a boat payment coming due. Let's look at some examples - oil pan gasket is a $22 part so even at $100/hr. it's hard to come up with 8 hours of labor. The power steering line and a pump is around $450 retail, so another $800 in labor? And that leaking timing chain tensioner - the seal is $.50. You get the idea. Much of this is DIY stuff, and I'd be suspicious of the play calls in the suspension (tie rods, by the way, around $50 ea.) without seeing it. Time to find a different mechanic or roll up your sleeves and get greasy and save some real money.
