2000 e39 528i sunroof will not close all the way.
i have a 2000 528i and the sunroof all the sudden will not close right. i try to close it and it starts to go up before it is in the right position. about a 1/4 to short. also it is hitting the wind deflector and bouncing back. that prob i can live with though. i tried the faq fourm on here and it came up with no matches. i know this can't be right. anyone have any idea's? thank you ahead of time if you do.

Have you tried a reset on the sunroof?
PRESS IN and HOLD the sunroof closure rectangular slide button for as much as 3 minutes. During this time the roof will open, close, slide etc. to re-calibrate the positions.
The windscreen will block the sunroof from closing in hot weather. I think it's something to do with materials expanding in the heat and the windscreen not being moved out of the way in a timelt manner. I can usually get mine closed when this happens by holding the winscreen down by hand, and quickly releasing it when the sunroof gets close to closing.Ed CT

erictheredd,
If you tried the reset by pushing the button 'in' and got the roof to move up & down, then now try pressing and holding the button 'forward' (as if you were normally closing the sunroof) for 10 seconds or more to see if it moves the sunroof into recalibration mode (back and forth).
If that doesn't work, you may need to get out your sunroof crank tool from the tool kit, and manually close it until you can resolve the issue. You'll have to puul off the dome light cover to access the motor with the manual crank hole.Ed CT

Not a fix but...
I have the same problem when the weather is hot. I suspect that the problem is wear in the pivot points of the arms on the wind deflector that cause the deflector to move to the lowered position as the sunroof contracts them as the sunroof moves forward. I suspect adding a thickness of tape or something to the top of the arms to increase the movement downward of the wind deflector would fix the problem. I just haven't found the right "something" yet.
I the meantime, I simply push upward on the leading edge of the sunroof as it closes as it approaches the wind deflector. This works well once you learn the spot to push up and not catch your finger in the sunroof seal (rear portion of the middle of the front frame). This creates just enough deflection in the sunroof to clear the edge of the wind deflector.
