Prewar BMW Front Spring
The BMW 326, 327, 321 and 335 have an "un-equal arm" independent front suspension. It features a transverse leaf spring that also functions as the IFS lower control arm. During restoration we often find that the third leaf from the bottom is broken. This third leaf has a pair of safety straps that ties it to the main leaf on the bottom. This is there in case the main leaf breaks in service. The third leaf breakage occurs when the car is driven with inoperable front shock absorbers and/or is missing the rubber bumper stop that is designed to limit body roll. This causes the safety straps to overload that third leaf under unrestrained deflection. Eventually the overloaded leaf will fail.

Very useful information. Thank you. I have a 1939 BMW 321
currently being restored. Almost finished a few more things to correct and add.
Do you know an approximate value for these cars ? The restoration took a lot
longer and much more money then I anticipated with some unexpected illness
slowing me and the process down. I'm seriously considering selling the vehicle
after I had a few months of pleasure of enjoying it.
What would be a rough value base-line in the US ?
I have not found any other 320 or 321 being offered for sale so I'm hesitant to
name a price. I would like to know what to expect to get for it.

Prewar BMW Front Spring
The value will fluctuate greatly depending on several factors: 2 Door Sedan or Cabrriolet? Pre-war or postwar? These cars are generally at the lower end of the value spectrum for these early cars. You can call me on my cell phone at: (415) 250-9386 and I will help you to establish a value. I am in California.

BMW 321 - 1939 and 2 door sedan (coupe ? )
Yes, sorry I forgot to tell you its not the convertible. I wish it was !
It is a 1939 and it is restored to more or less original. No performance or
other modifications and no updating.
When I got it the value was down and I watched the "hot" cars value
going up crazy high. The 321 is a low-end compare to them I agree and
even then it cost almost the same to restore !
learned my lesson for sure.Laszlo - Greer, SC

If you send me your chassis (VIN) number I may have some information in my files. I will do a quick search and see if I can help with your valuation. You can contact me at: tom@bmwvintage.org
