need help; E46 Coupe auto window seal feature (in winter)

My 2006 330ci now sits outside in northern NJ after selling our home. Last nite after returning from out of state trip I cleaned last weeks snow & ice off the car windows. This morning the drivers side window was evidently frozen in the sealed up position. After opening the door I couldn't close it until after I ran/heated the car up for 10 mins. The window was stuck in the "sealed up position" so couldn't close the door completely. Is there a way to cancel this auto-seal feature in winter time?? thanks

No. And you don't want to disable the feature because the slightly "down" position is necessary to clear the A pillar when closing the door on coupes and cabrios. If you scrape off the ice all the way down to the outer door seal, the window should be able to operate normally.

thanks JK, I understand the need for the slightly down position to close door

but is there a way to freeze it in the slighly down positioin for winter?? There was absolutley zero snow or ice on the drivers side window. But I had to scrape and clean the windshield that nite so perhaps some snuck in and caused the window to freeze up against the seal. I could not close the door until the car fully heated up inside.. that sure wasted fuel as well

The other thing that can start to act up is the switch in the door latch that operates the window drop feature. If the switch is starting to fail, it can leave the window up even though the door is unlatched. I'm sure there is no option or setting to disable the window drop feature, although you could probably jerry-rig a manual switch in the window circuit to do what you are asking about. Keep in mind that you will get wind whistle at highway speeds if the windows can't go all the way up.

I hear you... I will just leave it alone and hope doesn't happen again next time bad weather hits

also; of your 2 M3's, which one did/do you like best since they are 2 different generations.. '95 or '01?

We (my son) still has both of the M3s. I prefer the E36 for its overall balance in handling and performance, despite its lower power and shabby interior materials. The E46 is more luxurious, with significantly upgraded interior materials. But, the steering is too light, and keeping that racing engine maintained is very expensive: Just received its third vanos unit last summer at 100k miles ($5k for parts only).

3rd Vanos unit within 100k miles??? not good

I like the looks of the E46 more, but I hear you on the E36 raw sports handling & performance. I assume the E46 is a lot heavier also due to its luxurious equipment

I haven't compared weight specs, but what you add in things like power wing windows you subtract for no spare tire or jack and then add 90 HP. The E46 is fast and nice, it just has more of a cruiser feel than the E36. Of course, this is the (commercially successful) direction that BMW has been going for about 15 years now. We enthusiasts just don't make up enough of the buyers for them to make the ultimate driving machines anymore.

agree on that. But I must say my E46 330ci is a nice cruiser, but also quick and fun to drive. But for raw power and fun that even looks like the ol' days we puchased a gently used '08 Mustang GT Convertible 2 yrs ago. Nice combo to own that puts a smile on my face either way.
