    I did not know the convertible top had an interior liner that covers the metal bows. My 1997 does not.

    So you have heard of such a thing -- an interior liner for a soft top? I would think that more fabric added to the top would prevent it from folding all the way into the well.

    Sure keeps you warmer and quieter... If that is what you want... Spunds like 99 to 02:

    BMW Z3, 1999-2002, Headliner, Ribbed Twill, Dk.Charcoal

    Price: $289.00
    Sale Price: $249.00

    BMW Z3 & M ROADSTER HEADLINER, TWILL, CHARCOAL

    We offer BMW Z3 and M Roadster Replacement Headliners for the 1996 through 2002 models. These are made from the same material as the original and will not fit 1996 through early 1999 models that did not have a headliner. When replacing your convertible top we recommend also replacing the interior headliner with this matching part number if your existing headliner is showing wear.

    I did not know this. Looks like the headliners were added in 1999, maybe along with electric motors.

    The description sounds like it is held on by plastic ribs that snap onto the metal bows.

    Nope. My 1998 (Dec 1997 build) has electric top and no headliner. Just replaced the top.

    So I guess the headliner came in 1998 and the Auto Tops Direct page must be incorrect. It says:
    [h=1]BMW Z3 HEADLINER
    Fits the 1999-2002 BMW Z3 and M3 Roadster Convertible[/h]

    We have a 98 and replaced the roof a couple of years ago, no liner from the same supplier. I thought the liner came in 2000/2001 but not 100% on that.

    I thought the OEM liner came with the facelift in 2001 (I know it isn't on my 97), but according to realoem, I'm wrong:

    http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...09&hg=54&fg=10

    It says up to 4/99...so I changed my car to a 4/99 build and the retrofit is not an accessory that's available. Then I changed it to 3/99 and it IS available which tells me that 4/99 made it standard. Not necessarily so, but that would make sense, anyway.
