Idle Pulley Noise - Lubrication Fix

Since I've gotten so much great DIY advice from this forum, I thought I'd give back. If your idle pulley starts to really squeal, you should know that a good lube can save you the cost of replacement. The trick is that you have to remove it. You cannot oil it while it's installed, and even once off the engine, there's a trick to it.

Once you have the idle pulley de-installed, inspect it closely from all angles. Notice that you can't directly access the axle or bearings that need the oil. Face the front of the pulley downward and look at the back. If you drip the oil just right, you can get it to flow under that hub and toward the axle. You'll need to use plenty of oil, but not so much that it ends up dripping all over the belt surfaces, on or off the car.

I did just that a few months ago. I've since racked up almost 20K miles, and no idle pulley failure.

So I hope I've saved some of you a few bucks.

My advice is to replace it (it's only $15) and check all the other moving parts....

and belts. It's kinda alot of work to get to all of those parts, why not replace?? and the alternative cooling system failure could be catastrophic. I had that failure with one of my BMWs, that was expensive........
