    air bag light reset advise

    Hi,

I know that I cannot reset the air bag light with a regular OBDII reader and that I'd need a special tool. I've ordered one but it's going to take to the end of the month to get here and I've been avoiding driving the car until the air bags are operational. I called the dealer who said "around 1/2h, so 60$.." which seemed shady to say the least. I then called a private shop who said to read and reset the SRS is 97$+tax. Are either of these prices sane?

The SRS light was triggered when I had the letherette driver seat fixed and the guy who did the seat powered on the car with the seat out. I suspect (and hope) it is just a reset that is needed.

I waited out the arrival of the PA Soft 1.4 cable & software. I was able to clear the SRS issue.

Prices for resetting air bag lights vary greatly. As you learned, it takes only a few seconds. The dealer quoted my daughter $180 to do it so she took it to my usual indy mechanic who did it for free. She took him doughnuts.

BTW, my understanding is that the airbags will generally work in spite of the airbag light being lit.

See my website, you can get from me a all in one airbag/srs/oil/inspection reset tool for the price your dealers are asking for 1 reset. That tool works on BMW from 1987-2006, plus Mini and Rover from 2001.
Does NOT work on BMW with Conditioned Based Service / CBS. Conditional Based Service (CBS) is an evolution of BMW’s standard service indicator system (SIA) previously fitted across the model range. It was first introduced in 2002 when the ‘new’ 7’ series model was launched and is now a standard feature on the following models: 1’ Series E87 (2004 on), 3’ Series E90/91 (2004 on,5’ Series E60/61 (2003 on), 6’ Series E63/64 (2004 on),7’ Series E65/66 (2002 on) (This info is based on USA spec, varies by country spec.)

The tool fits on various BMW with the old 20-pin round plug and also the OBDII plug.
Be reminded that many of the cheap or even more expensive tools do not work on BMW built before 1994.
