Burning rubber smell from left rear wheel area

I get this burning rubber smell from the left rear wheel area, I have the parking brakes, looked to see if diff is leaking but nothing seems to look ubnormal.
The smell as far as I know is comming from the tyre itself, even though it doesnt appear to be hot, what can this be?
Im just scared incase I get a blowout whilst driving in the motorway.
    Thanks
    Freddy

Are you sure the smell is burning rubber? Is it possible it is brake pad odor? Does the wheel hub heat up excessively? The exhaust may be touching something made of rubber, i.e. hanger, etc. The CV joint boots are also made of rubber. I suggest you slide under the car(as far as possible) when it is sitting level. Inspect anything even close to the exhaust. I have a friend with a Supersprint exhaust and it rubbed against the rear anti-sway bar...very annoying bump/thump sound. I'm just throwing some ideas out. good luck

If it is the tire, maybe the rim is bent, or the tire is not seated properly on the rim which may cause the tire to heat up excessively. I had a bent rim and it caused the tire to wear abnormally and generated a lot of road noise. It did not heat up though. good luck
