    popping sound from catalytic converter

i experience a loud popping sound on occasion just after turning off the engine or even when driving. i understand this noise is likely produced by the catalytic converter. my question is, do i need to get this replaced or can i leave it alone? is this producing some sort of damage to my car?

    That's normal . . .

What's happening is minute particles are trapped within the crimped & welded seams & as the outer casing cools off, which is the case when you shut it off, the particles get crushed & the sound is amplified & resonates thru-out the casing. What you hear when driving is most likely the same thing & the cat or resonators are cycling thermally under varied driving conditions. Household furnace heat exchangers also make these same sounds as they heat up & cool off. Even the most meticulous fabrication & assembly cannot prevent this phenomenon & is nothing to worry about.
