run on problem w/ weber 32/36 DGAV carb

    Greetings 2002-ologists:
I have run into a little problem on my '76 '02. Lately, when
I shut the engine off, the motor continues to run-on for 2-4 seconds. I need advise as to correctly adjust my carb. Also, it seems my carb has been gulping a lot of gasoline. Please give advise. Thank you before hand...late.

Re: run on problem w/ weber 32/36 DGAV carb

A little more info is required. Do you have the original Solex carb or a Weber 32/36DGAV? On both, there is a little solenoid valve that suppose to cut off the idle gas supply. You can't miss it, it's cylinderical and has a male spade lug connected to it.

If the electrical power is connected to the solenoid, you cut off gas to the idle jet. So, a simple test would be to start the car, and remove the wire to the solenoid. The car should die from fuel starvation almost immediately. If not and it's studders as you described, check out the relay that controls the solenoid, it may be hangind up or has poor contact. Good luck.

Oophs, I should have written that if there is NO electrical power to the solenoid, the car should die.

    Like the subject line says...

    I think it's a Weber :)

    R. Santos,

You mention the car runs on by itself AND is gulping large quanties of gas. Those are indicators of several things posssibly wrong:

    1) Poor ignition timing causing detonation & runon
    2) Wrong spark plugs being used causing the plugs to glow red "dieseling" the engine
    3) Incorrect float level setting causing "rich running".

Your problem could be one or all of the above.

Since the car is running w/the ignition OFF I'd check #1 first. Also using mass quantities of gas indicates this too.

    Regards,
    Frank

Re: run on problem w/ weber 32/36 DGAV carb

    Greetings,
I had this problem before! What's required is a solenoid which cuts off the fuel supply when the power is turned off. If you don't have one, you need one! It's pretty easy to tell if you've got one, there will be a wire leading to the passengers side of the carb. If not, I'm not sure who's got them available, I got mine from an outfit in Monterey CA. If you need to know the name and address, just let shoot me a mail, and I'll get you their phone # and the part number.

If you've already got the solenoid, you've probably got one of the other problems that people suggested! Good luck.

My 76 was doing this too after I purchased it. My mechanic told me to use higher octane gas. That cured the problem.
