1987 325is Overheat then Check Engine

I just recently took my 1987 BMW 325iS into the shop to have the oil changed. When I got it out it seemed to be running slightly hotter than usual. Then today after running it a little hard (shifting at around 4000rpm) for a few minutes. It overheated and the check engine light came on. Luckly I was pulling into the parking lot as I noticed. Now the check engine light will not go off. It does not overheat as long as I am not driving it very hard. I read in the manual that the check engine light is just for emmision circuitry and since there are no emmision standards here that is not an issue. But why did the Check engine light come on after an overheat and why did my car overheat in the first place? Any help is much appreciated.

    Thank you,
    William

Have you checked to make sure your engine has oil in it? Did the
oil change jockeys check or fiddle with or change your coolant?
Did they use a lighter weight oil than you normally use? Sounds
like whatever changed on your car to make it overheat happened
when you got your oil changed. You're in a much better position
to investigate this than we are, get on it Watson :-)

They did not mess with the coolant and the engine does have oil in it. I am not sure what they put in it but I asked them to put 20w50 in it.

Dont forget the Thermostat! That part failed while I was on an elevated interstate & had to suffer with the heater on max heat to cool the engine & exit safely. Easy to replace while you are doing waterpump job. Good luck

My overheat issue was very elusive...it turned out to be the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
