Does the EZ pass have a battery or is my windshiel

windshield preventing the machine from reading it?
Does it emit a signal or is it just a card that a machine reads
    (like a credit card)?

I got stopped at the toll booth with a long line of people and it is
    not very convenient.

    Thanks.

Re: Does the EZ pass have a battery or is my winds

It does have a battery I'm told, at least the "Fast Lane" version in Mass. does. 2-4 yrs of life unless you have a cell phone in the car then about a year. Mine works fine behind the mirror on the opening in the IR windshield. The woman at Fast Lane told me some BMWs need a transponder on the front license plate due to windshield issues, FWIW.

Try mounting it in the clear area at the bottom of the dash in the center or at the clear area next to the mirror. Chances are you have a IR windshield. It blocks the signal. I have the same problem with the SunPass here in FL

    I don\'t think it has a battery (m)

The EZ-Pass system is set up to work like the proximity cards that so many companies use, or even the Mobil Speed Pass. There is a large coil placed either in the roadway or above the booth. This coil produces a continuous EMF (electro magnetic field). When your EZ-Pass moves through this field, another loop within the EZ-Pass picks up this EMF and generates an electrical signal (inductive pick up) which powers a very low power transmitter of sorts in the EZ-Pass. This transmitter sends out a short bursted signal with the tag number currently moving through the gate. The burst is picked up by an antenna in the toll lane and relayed to the computer which 1) validates your tag and 2) charges your account.

    One more thing

The reason the IR windshields provide such a problem to the EZ-Pass is not that the high power signal from the toll booth can not reach your tag, it is that the very low power signal from the tag can not penetrate the metallic coating on the way out. It is for this reason that BMW added the cutouts in the IR coating behind the rear view mirror and low center (radar detectors).
You should not need the front license plate tag on your 7 if the EZ-Pass tag is placed in this cutout.
