I own a 5-series, want an XJ next

XJR is faster but does not "feel" nearly as nimble

regardless the interior of a jag is far superior in terms of comfort, had my fun with the 1998 528i/5 but it's time to grow up

Re: Hmm, Bimmer vs. Jaguar debate anyone?

i remember that a couple years ago i really wanted my first car to be an XJS. then i ended up getting an E30 because it was dirt cheap, now a year after i bought my first car, a 86 325e, i recently bought a 87 325is and sold my old car to my parents. Im soo glad i never got a XJS, however, if i ever find a cheap XKE/E-Type, id admit i wouldnt be able to resist.

Z3 is the best car Jaguar never made

I just bought a 2001 Z3, and actually have a XK140 Roadster in my Garage that was my dead fathers. The bastard was a deadbeat NYPD (for the flag wavers), and I actually stole it from him and hid it in a storage shed. I have a picture of myself sitting on the hood when I was 1 year old. That's how long I've been a Jaguar Fan. By the way, that's pronounced Jag U Are, as opposed to the american Jag Wire. I was there for the dissappointing Group 44's, and more importantly there when the Cats Pounced at Daytona. Last year they said "Jaguar leading GTS" but it was really a Ford Cosworth. They didn't even try to hide it under different covers.

Growing up I loved the E type, but being born in 61 made it a little difficult to own one. I always wanted a Series II 4.2. Pure sex. The Series I was great too, but the II was perfect. Something got lost in the III though. Front end got fat, chrome got fat, wheels got fat, and the engine got fat. They lost me somehow. Everyone that sees my 140 for the first time, after first saying "what kind of car is that" always, 100% of the time, says does it have a V12. I don't know why, but that bugs me. People asking if my 56 has a V12 when Jag didn't offer one till 70. People associate a Jaguar with a V12. No one seems to know Jaguars always had straight sixes and exhausts that sounds like a sport car is supposed to. I admit that the XJR9 was the sweetest sounding race car ever made. I could sit there at Daytona/Sebring with my eyes closed and pick out the two cars from the rest of the pack. But hey, those where race cars.

So at an early age I was a Jaguar fan. Still am. I collect a bunch of stuff. If I found a magic lamp, and a car jennie popped out and offered to make me three wishes, what would they be? My first choice, a XK120C or C Type. Only 53 made. The next choice would be a D Type. That car pioneered the independent rear suspension later seen in the E Type, disc brakes, and it would have to have that fin on it. Wild front bonnet that sweept around to the narrow waist. Short trunk. Short overhangs. My last choice would be an XKSS. The C and D Types where race cars, but back then Race Cars were fast road cars. The XKSS was a production car based on the D Type. Truely a pure sport car. They made 16 of them, and 15 where sent to the states. All of a sudden the great fire, and Jaguar Coventry is no more. Only 16 cars. I saw one at Sebring. All had straight sixes. All were roadsters.

All through the 50's and 60's a Jaguar was considered the the "working mans sport car" They were considered affordable. A 65 E Type cost about $ 6,700 according to a magazine I have. Just a little more then american made cars, and far less then the rest.

So now let's move foward. I'm 40, I want a open two seater roadster, a real sport car. I want to be sitting all the way back in front of the rear wheels. I want a straight six with dual overhead cams, a sweet sounding exhaust. I want excellent 4 wheet disc brakes. I want a car that has short overhangs, a long bonnet, a narrow waist and a tight [Oops!]. When I sit in the cockpit, I want to feel like I'm in a jet fighter. Not too luxurious, not too plush, and not too comfortable after all, it's a sport car. This is not a big deal, but I want my emergency brake handle in the center. Most of all it has to be affordable. I do have to work for a living. I find it odd the the few XKR's or Z8's I see are all driven by old men. Budget tells me I have to be under $40.

Let's look at my options. Never been in league with a Porsche, Corvettes too expensive also, and did you ever notice how the service bay at the chevy dealer is 90% Vettes. Drove a friends MR2, and another friends Miatta. The MR2 felt like a toy, and the Miata reminded me of my sisters MG Midget. Thought about the TT and S2000, but there was always something that didn't do it for me.

Hey wait a minute. Jaguar now makes a car thats affordable. The X Type!!! Hah It could be my "fathers Oldsmobile". That's not even a sport car. Well, Why is that XK8 so expensive. Why does it have a V8? I hope people burden you XK8 owners with the question "Does it have a V12" ? I read that it doesn't even have a sporty ride and is on the heavy side. Sorry Jaguar. The car you make that I can afford, I don't want. The cars you make that I like, I can't afford. The X Type commercial says it all. Nothing about the car itself, but the fact that, "I own a Jag". That's the selling point for the X Type. Most Jags for that matter.

I own a BMW Z3. It's everything I wanted. A pure sport car. I'm a 100% satisfied customer. It's Beamer to me. I personaly don't like Bimmers. Growing up in the 70's my nieghbor had bunch of R50's, R60's, a R90S and a 2002. Excellent motorcycles, ugly car. I watched the history of BMW autos on the History Channel a few weeks ago. They only went up to the 2002, and missed the best part of BMW history in my opinion. Funny boxy little things. The noses angle forward like amphibious vehichles. But then that's all this is. My opinion.

BMW keep up the good work, and Jaguar, get real. I was so destined to be a Jaguar owner, but I guess I'm not in target market. Jaguar, make something like the new Z4, and bring back the 6. Stop listening to Ford. You make the decisions, and look at your history. Guess I need to buy me a BMW flag for Daytona/Sebring. I always liked Hans Stuck.

Re: Hmm, Bimmer vs. Jaguar debate anyone?

No comparison. New XJ looks better, is better value (XJR priced similarly to 745i) is several hundred pounds lighter so likely a much livlier handler. More performance, more style, more technology, new XJ rocks. 7 is just ugly. Well ugly and low quality anyway. OK, ugly, low quality and fat...

    Depends on what you want...

My "dream" car would be a Black/Black Manual 750iL E38 BMW. Too bad that is only a custom job, so I have the next best thing, a Black/Black Manual 735i E32 BMW.

Jag VS BMW ( and Mercedes too)

I'm thinking very seriously about my next car being a XJ8 or XK8. I'd just like a few opinions on the Jag reliability VS the BMW and M-B too. I'm somewhat knowledgable on these brands but I haven't talked to many about reliability. Give me a reason to get the Jag! Thanks

Re: Jag VS BMW ( and Mercedes too)

Jaguars are as reliable as BMW or Merc. One thing Jaguar has the other two don't have is cachet. A jag will always turn heads - especially in Europe and Australia. The other two are used as taxi-cabs in Europe. No Jaguar has ever been used as a Taxi- maybe a limo for hire but never as a taxi.

So think about it do you want a car or a taxi. Also no one makes an interior like Jaguar (except Bentley and I am not even sure about them now since BMW bought them).

    cheers

    happy Jaguar owner

BMW does not own BENTLEY, owns Rolls Royce

Sorry, Jags dont turn any heads in the states, theyve looked the same for years. even this new XJ doesnt look hardly any different, but if thats what you guys like, then more power to you. there\'s a reason why you are jaguar owners, because their products and classic designs appeal to you. I for one, am not into the classic or retro look, I want something technologically fresh, innovated, and cutting edge, which is why I own a 745i. not knocking the jag, just doesnt appeal to me.<br>

Re: Hmm, Bimmer vs. Jaguar debate anyone?

Jaguars do not turn heads anymore (except for the XK8). They are very boring and unimaginative. The new XJ8 is just as boring as the one before (they lookm the same!). Don't get me wrong, Jags cars are very good-looking and classic (except for the X-type) but just not for me I guess. I prefer BMW all the way.

    Agree, different in US

I do like some of the Jags, specifically the new XJR. That's sort of how I ended up viewing here. However, I must agree with Mike that the USA is a different beast. S-Class Benzes and 7 series BMWs tend to get the most notice and respect here. Keep in mind the USA doesn't get the smaller engined cheaper versions of these models, and they are certainly much less ubiquitous than in Europe. Also, the Jaguar name has lost some panache since being taken over by Ford (not meant as an insult, just an observation), and since the introduction of the X-type (driven by three out of four secretaries).
Oh, and by the way, Volkswagon owns Bentley. BMW owns RR.

Re: BMW does not own BENTLEY, owns Rolls Royce

i have a 99 xjr and i love its styling, i live in chicagoland and it turns plenty of heads and gets way more compliments than the s500's or 540s that friends own. im a big fan of the jaguar interiors too, they just look more luxurious and classy. i think the jaguars style is classic and that's what allowed the style to last for so long. the benz's and bmw's after a few years look outdated and you see way too many of them on the road. that said, i'm not sold on the x350 yet, it just doesnt look as smooth or sleek as the older model

    Pointless Debate

I don't mean that offensively to anyone, merely an observation.

When you're considering spending the kind of money we're talking about here on nothing more than a mode of getting from A to B, then your decision is entirely emotional and there is no right or wrong. Certainly if there were glaring faults or issues with anything you were considering then practical advice would be to stay away. But, we're now in a position where for the power, road holding, comnfort, features, performance etc. there is little to no difference between Jags, BM's and Mercedes. There is no practical reason to buy any one of these cars and no commercial justification that makes any sense... you don't buy one because it's a good load lugger, or because you need a 155mph top speed (unless you live in Germany perhaps), you don't buy them for the fuel economy either. You buy a Jaguar, BMW, Mercedes or any other expensive car because your heart tells you to and you ignore your head.

So you can argue all you like about which is better in your opinion, but at the end of the day, that's all it is... your opinion and your personal preference. Better or worse doesn't come into it... just the beauty of the decision you made for yourself.

    Regards,Dave B, XJ8 4.2 SE.

The Z3 was a roof-less E36 compact. It sold well

but didn't drive well at all. The M Coupe and the Z3 Coupe were awosome.

Re: Jag VS BMW ( and Mercedes too)

The jaguar xj is far superior to both the mercs and the bmws. The 7series is hidious and lacks anything that could be considered desirable. The s-class is better but to get any kind of performance you have to buy to S600 which will set you back about 100,000. The jaguar xj super v8 has everything. It is lightning and luxury (for passenger and driver), it also does 29 miles per gallon. The jaguar is awesome, especially if you intend to drive it yourself.
