Why do wipers bounce along windshield?

It rarely rains in So. Cal, so I only put on new blades (OEM only) when they don't clean so well. But it's pouring here now. The wiper blades sort of bounce along the windshield - not a smooth wiping action. And then "squeek" sort of at the reversal. I suspect it is residue from spray wax at carwash. On window and blade. Not sure. If so, how does one clean up the mess???

Clean the windshield thoroughly, then use Rain-X

And, make sure your wipers are in good condition.

I agree, clean the glass thoroughly.

Clean the rubber blade inserts and the windshield. I used some spray glass cleaner like SprayAway or Stoner's Invisible Glass. You can also try BonAmi if that does not work, but you risk scratching the glass. Search for BonAmi on these boards, as there are two kinds. Also, BonAmi is made from egg shells, so donít let it sit on the paint at all or your carís finish will look cloudy.

My wipers started to chatter and got much louder over a few weeks, to the point of being embarrassing. My windshield was pitted badly enough to look frosted or sand blasted when the sun shined at it just right. Tried new BMW OE and aftermarket wiper inserts, then inserts with blades, then inserts with blades and arms. Tried RainX and several different cleaners. Eventually had to just do the windshield, even though it didnít have any rock chips or cracks.

Hopefully yours just needs a good cleaning, but if it gets worse you may eventually need new glassÖ

i wax it just like it was body paint (more)

wax and polish no differently than the rest of the car. paint beads unbelievably, and you don't have to use your windshield wipers for a month or more.

    my father always did this...

When you say you had to do the windshield (m)

are you saying you replaced it? If you don't mind me asking, what does an OE windshield cost? The reason I ask is that I have a 2000 740iL with 102K. The car is only a few years old but the windshield has about 6 years of drive time. As you can imagine, I have a fair amount of pits in it. Thanks

P.S. I had to add two more Rubbermaid 18 gallon containers to my collection in the garage. Had to have a place to store all my car detail stuff. Now I've got 12.

    Windshield replaced

About $650 for windshield, gaskets, and installation... and that was the plain glass without the IR coating or anything special.

    Two more containers, huh?

Re: Why do wipers bounce along windshield?

If your wiper blade retetntion tabs are too tight against the rubber blade this will cause the blade to "skip". The blade accutally has to be able to shift slightly orientation on the up/down cycles not to "skip".

Re: Why do wipers bounce along windshield?

    Rich,

I'm in LA and I noticed the same thing yesterday. The wiper "jumps" near the driver's left part of the windshield. I do think it has to do with wax from car washes. I noticed beading on the glass after the rain. It is sort of annoying but like you said, in So. Cal. it doesn't rain that much.

    Good Luck,

    Norman

Any streaking or blurring at night?

I've thought of trying that but want to be sure the vision is completely clear between applications.

I paid $385 for the glass, $24 for the seal, (m)

$85 to install, plus tax, at the dealer two weeks ago.

Installation requires special templates. Make sure the installer has them and knows how to use them.
