Separated at birth? Hyundai Elantra & next BMW

Over the weekend I saw a Hyundai Elantra in person and thought it looked familiar. After thinking a bit, I suddenly remembered why. It looks exactly like Chris Bangle's new 5-series design. Ugh!! See for yourself.

    First the Elantra, available today...

    Now Bangle's new 5-series...

    Scary, huh?

YUCK!!!!! Front end *does* look like the Hyundai. Ugly ***-end looks like a cheap Dodge Stratus.

Overdone! Remember the “KISS” principle, Bangle?

IMHO Bangle is overreacting to all the flack he

...for being too timid with the redesign of the E36.

If you don't remember this, go back and read the car mags of that period - late '98 or so. He was uniformly flayed for not being innovative enough.

IMHO we're seeing the fallout here.

    This probably isn't Bangle's design (m)

I agree that the 5 series pictured is grim indeed, but I doubt that it represents anything more than idle speculation about what the next 5 will really look like. The pic certainly appears to be a decent P'shop job of an E39; while certain details are doctored (such as the trunk and the headlights), the proportions are all the same.

Note also that, aside from the taillights, the vehicle contains none of the new, Z9/X coupe/E65 design cues that Bangle seems so fond of. I'd be pretty surprised if the real new 5 doesn't have the inverted, turn-signal-over-headlights look of the E65, along with the enlarged kidneys that you see on the Z9, as well.

I'm not saying the real Five will be any better than the vehicle pictured. In fact, it may be substantially worse.

Even worse are Bangle's interiors (m)

Witness the 80s refugee interior styling of the new 7. Too bad Gene Roddenberry is dead; it would be nice if he were able to see how much influence his design for the bridge of the Enterprise D really had on the world.

I think my favorite feature is the armpit-directed HVAC vents.
