what kind of oil do you use for the Z4?

my oil indicator comes on yellow after i turn the engine off. the manual says i need to add more oil, but didnt specify the type. Does anyone know exactly what type(ie weight, etc) of oil the Z4 requires?

exact type? BMW 5w30 synthetic. However, you could use Castrol synthetic 5w30 with no problems (or Mobil 1 or Haveline or etc.) You can look in the service and warranties booklet page 6 of your owner's packet. How many miles do you have on your car? The service rep at my dealer made me a friendly wager that I would not need to add any oil before service at 15,000 miles. Seems improbable, but we shall see.

My car was also showing the yellow oil light when the engine turned off. I'm at 6K KM's and my engine was missing 1 and a 1/4 L of oil...

    Who pays?

If the check oil light lights up yellow, is the oil covered under the full maintenance program? Does BMW foot the bill or do you have to top it off yourself?

    Re: Who pays?

i got the impression at my dealer that i would pay for either a top-off or a bottle of oil! i bought a couple of qts. of Castrol just in case and the oil level on the dip stick is edging closer to the bottom index mark. i have 4200 miles or so and am amazed that BMW allows 11,000 more miles on a new motor before service. my GM/Ford/DMX conditioned experiences make me "jittery."

Is there anyone who is really going to wait until 15K miles to change the oil?

    Willing to go 15K w/o a Change?

The service manager told me the engine was run at the factory until it was warm, and then it was shipped. Presumably it was drained first. That should have taken care of the chips and debris from manufacturing. So new Z4s are on their first change. My ’93 Honda was scheduled for 7.5K on organic oil, so 15K with synthetic 10 years later sounds reasonable.

Re: Willing to go 15K w/o a Change?

I was told the same thing when I picked up my car 10 days ago at the Performance Center. I asked about the 1st oil change, and the delivery specialist said the engine was run where it was manufactured with regular oil, then drained and shipped to the factory where synthetic oil was put in. He insisted that it won't need an oil change until the 15,000 mile service.

i have approx 4500mi on the Z. I guess oil consumption depends on the way you drive, and knowing myself; as my friends would say " drive it like its stolen"

    Wait a minute.

You have the oil service light come on after you turn the engine off? So do I, but only occasionally. Anyone else have this problem? I thought it was just me. What I did was check the oil level. Everything is fine on my car. I have been ignoring the light that comes on, since the oil level is good. I wonder if this is a "glitch" on some of the Z4s.

Some comments on oil and servicing the I6 motor. Getting to the oil filter is a snap. When you get a new filter from the dealer, you'll get the new "O" ring for the seal, too. As for actually changing the oil, refer to a Roundel article a few months back. I think it was last Fall. That article reported testing on the numerous properties of synthetic oils. It turns out that a lot of the new oils don't even get good until they have been run a few thousand miles. To change synthetic oil at 3000 miles, for example, would be a waste. Some syntetic oils are at their peak of performace with 6000 miles of wear. Back in the day, before synthetics became popular, I would change the oil and oil filter on a new car or truck once in the first 1000 miles, once again in the next 1000 miles and then every 3000 - 4000 miles. On motorcycles I would change oil and filter twice a year (that's another story since different bikes were using different grades of oil, but basically I was running light oil in the winter and heavier oil in summer. But then, I rode all year 'round back then). After I read the Roundel article, I decided to let the oil stay in my 2002 M3 for 6,000 miles, but I did change the filter at 1500 miles (it really is a snap and takes about ten minutes). By the way, I am a firm believer in using an oil extractor. Anyway, even though my Z4 is a lease, there is no way I can feel comfortable keeping the oil in the motor for 15,000 miles. I just can't do that. I'll change everything at 5,000 - 6,000 miles. The car has about 2,500 miles on it now. I'll change just the filter in the next week- end or two. Why filter and not the oil? Well, I have no evidence to support this, but I do feel that there can be particulates in the oil during break-in. That stuff should be picked up by the filter. When I change the filter, I get rid of the bits of metal and the oil can go on doing its thing. Just my two cents.

Wait 15k for 1st oil change, not a chance

my service advisor also told me that the 1st oil change is to come at 15,000 miles. I am old school and there is no freakin way i am going to wait that long. I am with Trex, i am going to change the opil every 6,000 to 7,500 miles. $30.00 to $40.00 in oil is well worth my peace of mine.

Re: what kind of oil do you use for the Z4?

I, for one will wait till I get around 15,000 miles on my car. I am at 12,300 now. I have had it since Feb 15, so you know that I haven't been keeping it parked. Yes, I have had my car up past 145 twice, the second time, I was on a downhill grade and actually hit 151 mph or so. I have a Maldivas Blue/Tan top 2.5I Z4 with Steptronics trans.
I just figured that if they were willing to tell me to wait 15,000 and since I have the 4yr 50,000 warrenty, if the engine blows, then I get a new engine.
I am not leasing it, either.

    Horse pucky...

I have a friend who used syn in a 525, and due to some intresting circumsances, the oil was not changed for 60K. The mechanic had to break the oil filter off with a hammer; the engnie was all gummed up. It still ran, but it sure as heck wasn\'t to \'factory specs.\' Oil breaks down with heat, and has components that are used up and contaiminents that build up. I just bought a car that can\'t have gone longer than 173K without an oil change (I\'m guessing it was last changed at 100K, when the timing belt was), and the interior of the engine is just like chewing gum with the old oil.

With modern synthetics, I do 7.5K (did 3K before I changed to syn). And my engine is a happy engine.
It's not the same oil for ever!

The oil is changed as many times as BMW says it has to. But it was part of a test. They drove it for 4 years, only stopped for gas and oilchanges. It only proves that an engine only wears out during warming up. The first mile after a cold start is the worst.
So you have to swap the engine of the 3? Reminds of my days when i did the same with the written-off Opel my dad gave me... Do you do it yourself? Must be, if you don't need heated seats, you must be the swap-the-engine-myself-kind-a-girl!!!LOL

    Don't throw your money away

The oil sensors in our Z4s are likely similar to my '96 740iL. I followed the MID service indicator (a visual version of the countdown mileage for the Z4) without any problems.

That car has just had it's 4th oil change in 7 years (47K miles original miles.) The engine is the most reliable part of that car.

    The oil monitoring system works.

Whups, I read Jason\'s post as meaning

one can wait a million miles between changes. ;) I just read the site, very cool!

Well, I\'ll be getting by with a little help from my friends... (everybody sing!). Many hands helps with a swap.
