    alternator for 525 m20 how many amps

    the parts places list two 115amp and 140amp.

    Which is it supposed to be...

    In all probability, 115A Manual transmission, 140A Automatic. Should be a label on the unit, on the rear cover, stating 115A or 140A! Might be underneath, use a mirror WITH ENGINE SWITCHED OFF to check around. Use a plastic framed mirror (no short circuits on contact with live terminals) for preference. Don't know if the M20 uses an air cooling duct to the alternator; my M50 does an d that partly masks the label on mine. Try to replace like for like; lower revs on the automatic means a greater output needed at low revs.

    My experience is also that components such as brushes, rectifiers and regulators, bearings are available from manufacturers agents.

    I'm assuming you've searched for e34 525i alternators.
    The m20 uses the 115 amp alternator while the m50 uses the 140amp one.
