Doesn't fit within their marketing plan...that's always the reason. Anyway, an alterior reason would be that BMW usually like their street cars to compete in series that somewhat resemble the original street car. DTM cars don't at all resemble the street cars, except in the shell. For example, the Audi TTs are built over a tube frame and have a twin-turbo V8 I believe.

    ...and RWD...but still

...while not a "silhuette" car the M3 GTR did not look much more like an M3 than the Merc CLK OR THE TTs look like their street cousins..<br><img src="http://homepage.mac.com/booboo/.Pictures/axis.jpg"height=180 width=180>

Do all the DTM cars use the same engine?

I don't think they are turbocharged, just V8's. Does the TT come with a V8 anywhere in the world? The cars are heavily regulated to keep costs down and competion close. There's not much innovation in the cars...at least that's what I see.
Anybody know any more of the details?<br>2002 AW/IR M3/SMG

You're right...I think I'm mixed up there. I think there is some special edition TT in europe with a V8, not sure however.

Definitely true, BMW exploited the rules and got great marketing out of it! Despite the engine, though, the M3GTR was still much closer in format than the DTM cars.

Re: Do all the DTM cars use the same engine?

Regulations require RWD and a 4 litre V8, normally aspirated. Engines are resticted for the angle of the V and types of materials used. Further, engines are sealed with only limited repairs allowed. Teams are allowed three engines PER SEASON for each two driver pairing. Engines appear to be in a mild state of tune as rarely are enine failures seen. Both the Opel Astra and the Merc can be had as road cars with a V8 but AFAIK there is no such Audi TT V8 road car. That said, I think they qualify the Audi by the fact that Audi does produce a V8 for other models in its lineup.

    Cheers

DTM= NASCAR European style! ETC is a

better series for the 320i. Better racing and real cars.

    because BMW is smart enough...

...not to make the marketing driven mistake Audi is doing flogging a big fat RS6 on the track. Granted they won the championship, but only with considerable help from the SCCA. Those cars are straight line pigs.<br><img src="http://homepage.mac.com/booboo/.Pictures/axis.jpg"height=180 width=180>

Re: yup. my bad. Y BMW\'s NOT competing in DTM?

It has nothing to do with market plan. BMW is flush with cash and ready to display its stuff anywhere is open. If a company has money for Formula One, that gives you a clue about resources.
What they are doing is avoiding a head on collision with an Audi embarrassement.
They don't want to go against a strong contender that might get press coverage in the US , the cash cow market.

Can any one tell me how come one of the most storied, touted and hyped carmakers - BMW- is NOT part of the venerable and prestigious DEUTSCHE TOURENWAGEN MASTERS (DTM)?? That's where respect is won in Germany among the titans. The answer is a four letter word : Audi.

The new A4 coupes are just so promising, BMW ain't risking it.

BMW pulled out of any race that Audi enters. They even "forgot" to update the site since their last win in the Speed GT but at the end the RS6's ended up taking the whole contest. They just never mention anything on BMWMotorsport site of any Audi win. Which I understand and also LOVE because it proves how much insecurity and fraud is involved.
Whether BMW diehards like it or not, AUDI is just superior when it counts. For how truly WONDERFUL I6 M3's are and the illegal V8 M3's are, they are still no match to the S4's or RS6's- so called 'pigs' in these forums for their weight. They know they would lose

Audi has been winning CONSISTENTLY and convincingly.

The key here is control and handling. You can have a Vette or Porsche or RWD M3 with a lot of raw power but it doesn't put it over the edge when compared with a heavier Audi with a rock solid tenacity on the tarmac that give it an edge on cornering and stability. HP in all these cars is comparable in these contests. This is not Nascar where it's all about HP. It's about Grip, stability and braking advantage into corners.
The ultimate thing to watch for is when Audi ammasses enough cash to splurge on Formula One like Pitschrieder really wants. They already have the expertise. The LeMans R8 proved a great superiority in open wheel car design and forced the legendary BMW off the track into retirement. Audi would prove to BMW that it ain't that hard to beat Ferrari if you really have the goods.

I look forward to your responses. Remeber...Keep it Civil...Keep it objective and no chest-pumping based on hot air but only FACT...

    Cheers.
