On good reason is image
Would you be happy shelling out $80K on a Sseven Series only to see a 18 year old pull up next to you in a $20K BMW - esp when it has been modified in a tacky manner. Actually I am embrassed by those modified Sevens (stupidly big chrome wheels etc) that pull up next to my 325, but that is a different story.
I hope the 1 Series comes here, but can see the marketing issue in NA. Heck Acura and Infinity only exist in the US market because it seems to be needed here. In the UK a Honda NSX is just that, a Honda. But here is needs to be an Acura NSX to differentiate it from cheap Hondas.

Re: On good reason is image
In the end it might just be how the car is marketed and the final build quality of the car. Yes it will cut the 3er sales some but I think by a small margin. The most expensive 1 will be a few thousand below the base 3er if they're smart to create an acceptable gap. My take on it is this might boost the E90 from being a wanna-be BMW to a car taken more seriously now that it has a little brother.
