    Transmission Fail/Safe Prog.

Hello everyone, I have a 01 X5 4.4 with sport package and today while driving the car downshifted abruptly and the Tansmission fail/Safe Prog msg was displayed on the dash and also the Check Engine soon light stayed on. It was really scary and a safety hazard as I was driving on teh highway when this happened. any ideas what the problem is? I called teh dealer and told me to bring it in, I am sick and tired of visiting the dealer almost once a month with some sort of problem. I am extremely disappointed in BMW, this car is the worst car I ever owned (maintenance-wise). I just bought this car 4 moths ago with 30k miles and the car has been in teh shop 10 times already. I am extremely nervous when teh warranty runs out I'll be in trouble... I am thinking of selling it, any suggestions? does it get better or worse over time? I assume the problems will increase as teh car gets older.....

    Please advise,,,, thanx Chrissi

Chrissi, I do not own an X5 but have been doing research on the internet. May be the following link will help.

It\'s happened to me, but resetting if fixed it+

Read the manual. Something about turning the key off and back on in the right sequence.

If that doesn't fix it, the dealer will definitely pin it down quickly.

    Good luck.

    Re: Transmission Fail/Safe Prog.

Welcome to the club. The same thing happened to us 10 days after buying the new 4.4. We called the service manager from the road who said that he never heard of such a thing (he lied) but "try to pull
over and start and restart the car". That got my wife to her destination but on the way home, like you on a major highway, the car went from 75mph down to 2nd or third gear in fail safe mode and then completely died. The problem that they found was electrical in nature, some kind of voltage regulator. So they fixed it and 5 miles from the dealership it happened again, this time a loose electrical clip. Like you my early experience with BMW was disappointing.

This is what solved my problems+

Dealer performed these resets to my x and it drove better than new. Felt like i unlocked missing horespower and the shifting was as smoot as can be.

    Re: Transmission Fail/Safe Prog.

    Hi guys !!!

Thanx for your help, I don't know what I would do without you guys ;)... The mystery with this car continues, last night the check engine light went off (very strange, this never happened on any of my previous BMWs) and the transmission fail/safe msg never came back and the car seems to be driving normal. Not sure wether I should be happy or not, I am not a mechanic but if this car has so much electronics and computer based controls, it sounds to me like it could be bad software (I wonder if the software is wondows based, then we're in trouble, probably a GPF or app not running status) and/or bad connectors becoming loose!!! Anyway I took the car into the dealer this morning just to see what they are going to say. I bet anyone $100 that they are going to say "performed full diagnostics, reset computer and all check out fine", lol. I need a dependable 4 wheel drive vehicle, I am seriously thinking of switching to a Lexus, Infiniti or a volvo, what are your views?

They're all decent SUV's but none drives like the X5. All are short on power, handling and braking. If you switch, look at the Acura MDX as well.

    Re: Transmission Fail/Safe Prog.

    Hi,

I was pulling out of a parking spot in reverse, and while 'still' rolling backwards I immediately shifted the car into drive and hit the gas. The car went into "tras failsafe mode" and wouldn't seem to go past 1st or 2nd gear. I was extremely worried, so I pulled over and turned the car on and off...trans. failsafe went off and I continued on.

Not sure what the problem was but now I wait until the car is stationary before shifting!
