Actually consider this..
You try and concentrate on something for two hours while constantly making adjustments to the car and monitioring other cars around you, oh and not to mention fighting the car the entire time. I'm not sure if you noticed, but these guys are all very thin and fit and that's no coincidence. There's no real amenities to these cars, it's just the driver and manual inputs. The brakes are stiff the steering is heavy and the ride is not the most supple. They also train very hard both in and out of the car. Are they really athletes? Yes they are.Steven

They are certainly athletic. But athlete is a
word that is abused to describe most any sportsman or woman.
The drivers are very fit, no doubt about that, but really the only muscle development they need is in the neck to counter the G forces on the head whilst braking and cornering.
Come to think of it very few athletes could fit in an F1 car, primarily distance runners.
