Re: Aftermarket Stereo system
I installed a complete Alpine system. If you are thinking on going for a Nav sys with screen, you may want to consider that in a roadster, the screen will be washed out by sunlight a fair amount of the time. I haven't found any wiring adapters anywhere. This is IMHO new territory. Crutchfield hasn't even measured this car yet. There was no interest on my part to have the BMW or aftermarket Nav system at all. I wanted better than average sound, at any speed. One of the biggest problems with aftermarket HU's etc, that I found was that in the Kansas City Metro area even the custom shops shied away from installing anything in the Z4. I also didn't want to pay big bucks to have a guinea pig vehicle either. One of the Roadfly Members found the part number for the BMW bezel (frame) to facilitate installing a single DIN aftermarket HU. I already had a complete Audio system from another car that was just collecting dust and thought that I would try to install it myself. Not that easy, but finally got it going. All I can say is that out of all (and there have been many) installs I have done myself, this one had the most challenges of all. BMW can't make a decent cup holder, but they sure know how to put a car together.
BTW, this is not a casual installation, unless you are an absolute wizard.

Re: Aftermarket Stereo system
I have been shopping around to replace the speakers with aftermarket ones and do the whole DVD unit, subs, probably one or two tens in the trunk with amps, etc. I want to replace the speakers behind the seats and the speakers on the doors (eight out of ten). I will probably disconnect the ones by the feet because my feet never listen. What I gotta know is exactly what size speakers can fit in these locations, especially the ones behind the seats. The installers I have talked to know jack $hit about this car so any posts or links on the whole process of taking apart doors, dash, wiring is appreciated. Lastly, do any of you know the best way I can find a mechanic's book on the car? Thanks.

Crutchfield hasn't measured the Z4 yet.
