I would not want to be JB's friend.

It seems Button is a bit of a backstabber IMO. I am betting BAR are not going to work too hard for him the rest of the year.

You'd think the FIA would wise up and not allow

teams/drivers to negotiate or sign contracts for future years when the driver is still under contract to another team.
Your issue is a valid one- how hard will BAR (for JB), Williams (for JPM) etc. work for a driver who has signed with another team? Is it unreasonable to think a driver signing elsewhere will somehow influence that driver's efforts? The answers are "not very" and "no" unless human nature is somehow repealed in the F1 paddock.

    How hard - I'd say plenty ...

They may try to keep new inovations etc. secret, but both driver and team want points. One position in CC means millions in championship money.

Motivation cannot be the same as 2 weeks ago.

I understand these people have a job to do but their results are going to decline somewhat from this move no matter what. He built relationships with these people and tossed them without thinking twice. They are called teams for a reason. Look at the way MS treats his mechanics. I am convinced it is part of the reason he is so successfull. Other team owners are taking mental notes on this decision. It is great news for BMW/Williams but God help him if he does not win races.

Re: I would not want to be JB's friend.

I agree the contracts between F1 teams and drivers are somewhat odd in their relationship with one another, but remember its about "business". Friendships and relationships are by-products of a business relationships. Some want to win championships, others want money, power, prestige, and lots of other things. Everyone is looking to position themselves for their best competitive advantage. Jenson has positioned himself to be able to call the shots, just like Webber, Montoya and countless others. We should all be so lucky and talented enough to do the same.

Handled poorly to say the least...

It is a business - let there be no doubt. If Williams is putting a better offer on the table and a legitimate out exists in the contract then acting on that out is acceptable in any business setting. Richards should be screaming at his own group for not managing the contract appropriately and resting the future of such an important part of the team on his perspective of the relationship.

However, delivering the message via fax was unprofessional and slap in the face to all those that have helped Button be where he is today.

On a racing level - not sure of the motivation - momentum and the relationships you build have no price...someone may give you 95% for the money - but you will only get 150% from someone when combined with many of the factors a winning team with a beloved driver have (aka Ferrari)

Does he really think Williams is a better drive? There must be a lot of money in the deal.

indeed and ego/competitive spirit won't allow

a guy like JB to lay down. JPM is the best example of nothing impacting his effort.

Don't be so hard on Jenson. Remember, FI is a cut throat and self serving business. Teams dump drivers prematurely all the time.

not too smart to burn bridges...

from what i've read from F1-live, sounds like they(button's managing company) found a loop hole or some sort of unclear wording in bar-buttons' 2005 contract. whatever it is, not too smart of a move for button. F1 is a very small world, what comes around goes around. i just don't know how can he look at the bar mechanics in the eyes for the rest of the season...
