Don't know, but it goes back a long way.
I think in the past two or three years the Roundel had an article about it. As I recall, the two different names started independently. That is to say, nobody ever said, "We gotta call the bikes one thing and the cars anothert".
I.myself, have a tendency to call all BMW vehicles "Beamers". Just an old bad habit I picked up when I had BMW motorcycles in the 70's and 80's.

Re: I have always wondered. Me too...Google +
popped up a page worth of links; one below from BMWCCA with the haughty bimmer for cars and beemer for sleds. Bimmer always sounded a lil' Biff&Babs for me, so I'm w/Trex and call 'em beamers. I must hang with the not cool/foo-foo crowd, lol! Ol'UncleMotorDavid

Not my style
I don't need the 168 hp. And a transverse motor? Something else to consider - if you think BMW automobiles are tough to own in the first model year, I am hearing some real horror stories about the 1200 GS.
I had boxer Beamers years ago and I'm ready for fewer endearing quirks and less fiddling.
But nothing will ever replace the sound of that Ducati.
