You can download the original SAE papers published by John Melvin on the SAE website. Studies in 2002 and 2004 reveal:
50G sled crash = 8000N on neck.
> 4000 N = basilar skull fracture (opposite of hanging, body stays in place and head moves under force of impact)
All devices tested other than HANS ~ 3900 N (Hutchens, D-Cell, G-Force)
HANS = 1000 N
HANS was also effective in a 100 G sled crash!
Review of crash database suggested HANS would have been protective in 7/8 deaths reviewed.
