2000 M5 ticking noise from motor at idle

I just recently purchased a 2000 M5 with 36k miles. I noticed that at idle the engine makes a ticking noise? Has anyone else experiences this noise? Is it normal? and if not is there anything that can be done about it?

I had the same problem with my M (29k) still under the extended warranty. Well mine was in storage &started it every couple weeks, the engine sounded like a diesel, then the next day it was Ok. So I brought it to the dealer and they found it to be the VANO's were the culprit. Glad I brought in for service while still under warranty, otherwise it's approx a 2k JOB!

This is normal VANOS noise. As another poster mentioned, as long as it is not loud it is OK. There is a VANOS Solenoid upgrade kit for model year 2000. The new solenoid increases the oil pressure upon start-up. What happens without it is when you first start the car you will hear a loud clicking noise for about 4 seconds until the oil pressure gets high enough to "lubricate" the VANOS system. Mine would happen intermittenly especially in very hot weather. I had mine done under warranty and it only effects model year 2000 as they upgraded the solenoid for 2001. I would check and see if this upgrade was already done and if not, I would recommend getting it done.
