Any recommendations for a diff rebuilder . . .

in the bay area? Been shopping around, would like to keep it within "driving distance" of the south bay.

the diff in question is an early sideloader style from an E3 or E9 coupe. It is a 3.64 40% LSD that needs seals and new clutch packs, maybe more. Not sure about the bearings, but might want them done as well, while in there.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

sounds like it'll cost a buttload to get it rebuilt

Hey Ian,

Upgrading to a new diff would require changing out the entire rear subfame as well, in order to mount the diff. This is obviously something I do not want to undertake, given the complexity of work involved. I already have a Dinan adjustable camber rear subframe as well, which has beefed up sway bar mounts, etc. This stuff isn't going anywhere.

And ya gotta remember, we 6er owners are used to throwing buttloads of money at our cars already, so this is nothing new :)

I've got a couple of quotes so far, ranging from $150 plus parts (if I can find them) to $750, parts and warrantee included. You familiar with Hanerhaus up in Santa Rosa? Heard mixed emotions so far...

Bottom line, I've got the diff I want, now just to make to ready for years of service.

And the bad dood was driving an e24! I was like =O
But it looked chunky hitting some of the turns.
I'd really like to ride your greenshrk from Davis to Berryessa (those roads are beautiful).
ANYWAY I digress... yah, I was just curious if earlier and later differentials were the same in terms of mounting / dimensions etc.
750 sounds pretty damn good, a little TOO good...

The 6er went for $28k to $32k in 1980, a damn lot of money! I am not an original owner, don't think I was making quite that kind of coin back then :(

Bought her in '90 for $14.5k, still pricy for a 10 year old car! So we've been together for 15 years now, been a long strange trip...
